Specialty Food Companies Donate to Hurricane Sandy Relief H urricane Sandy caused extensive damage, including power outages and flooding, along the East Coast since hitting landfall on October 29, 2012. In the following weeks, several specialty food companies reached out to donate time or products to help areas that were most severely affected. • American Roland Food Corp. donated 600 cases (approximately 180,000 servings) of its Steel Cut Oatmeal to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, located in Hillside, N.J. • Booskerdoo Fresh Roasted Coffee Co., Monmouth Beach, N.J., donated 10 percent of proceeds from online sales of its Jersey Diner Coffee in the month of December to the local volunteer Monmouth Beach Fire Company. The roaster also set up a cart in the days following the storm to hand out free coffee in Monmouth Beach. • Fairway Market, New York, donated 100,000 pounds of food from its damaged Red Hook, Brooklyn, store, to neighborhood charities. • Indian Harvest, Bemidji, Minn., donated 2,100 pounds of grain to ease hunger in affected areas along the Jersey Shore. The company shipped more than a ton of its Kansas Medley and Brown and Wild rice mixes to the American Culinary Federation's Atlanta chapter for New Jersey relief. • After losing power in Sandy's wake, Joe Leone's, Point Pleasant, N.J., brought in employees to cook food from the store to feed area first responders. The market delivered food for about 5,500 meals. • The National Association for the Specialty Food Trade donated $4,500 to relief organizations. Staff members contributed a total of $2,250 to organizations of their choice, while NASFT matched that amount with a donation to AmeriCares. Tokyo Named Michelin's Most Gourmet Capital for Sixth Year Tokyo retained its title as the Michelin Guide's world gourmet capital for a sixth consecutive year. The city was also lauded for having the most restaurants bearing three Michelin stars, though that number slipped to 14 from 16. This year, a total of 242 Tokyo restaurants were awarded stars, ranging from fine-dining European and Japanese establishments to casual restaurants serving standard dishes such as broiled eel or buckwheat noodles. LOS ANGELES GETS CAVIAR VENDING MACHINE Beverly Hills Caviar has unveiled its first touchscreen vending machine at the Burbank Towne Center, reports CBS Los Angeles. The vending machine, which operates daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., offers a selection of fine caviar, truffles, escargot, bottarga, blinis, oils, artisanal salts and Mother of Pearl plates and spoons, as well as gift boxes. Nepalese Teas Now Available in U.S. A group of social entrepreneurs from Colorado has launched Nepali Tea Traders, a company that sells premium and rare teas exclusively from small tea gardens in Nepal. The line includes 20 black, green, oolong, white and other specialty teas and blends, some with organic certification. Profits will be donated to the Nepal Youth Foundation. The teas are now available to consumers and wholesalers online at nepaliteatraders.com. "MOONSTRUCK" BAKERY OPENING NEW LOCATION IN BROOKLYN, N.Y. Cammareri Brothers, a 91-year-old, reallife family bakery featured in the movie "Moonstruck," is opening a new location this month in Brooklyn, N.Y. Patrons will be able to nosh on the same rolls made famous by the 1987 film, starring Cher and Nicolas Cage. The new Cammareri Brothers Cafe will serve bread, pastries and small hot plates, reports The Local. Wolfgang Puck Wines Now for Sale at Retail Wolfgang Puck Wines, the wine label of chef Wolfgang Puck, are now available to consumers at select retail locations in the U.S. Previously, the wines were sold only at Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group restaurants, Wolfgang Puck Bistro locations and Wolfgang Puck Catering venues nationwide. The wines are crafted by the Indelicato family, owners of California's DFV Wines and include such varietals as cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot and sauvignon blanc. STARBUCKS ACQUIRES TEAVANA Stating a desire to transform the $40 billion global tea category, Starbucks is acquiring specialty retailer Teavana Holdings Inc., which has 300 mall-based stores, for $620 million. Starbucks plans to develop a neighborhood-store concept for Teavana, which offers more than 100 varieties of premium loose-leaf teas, artisanal teawares and other tea-related merchandise, and continue to grow and extend its mall presence.
