Summer Fancy Food Show Booth 4121 Summer Fancy Food Show Booth 4220 Global Approach Atalanta was founded in New York City in 1945 and named for a character in Greek mythology who was worshipped for her hunting skills and formidable racing speed. The late co-founder Leon Rubin, Gellert's maternal grandfather, aimed to emulate the huntress's gifts by resourcefully and efficiently sourcing food for his customers. Shortly after he and co-founder Herbert Moeller went into business, they began importing canned hams from war-torn Poland, Denmark, and Germany. They expanded to importing shellfish from Cuba in 1947, then ventured into the waters of South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and the Bahamas. By the 1970s, the com- pany had importing deals in place with 42 countries. Rubin's son-in-law, George Gellert, succeeded him as president in 1973 and is still involved today as chairman of the board. The company moved its headquarters from downtown Manhattan to Elizabeth, N.J., in 1988. The new facility included corporate offices, a food-processing plant, a USDA meat inspection station, and more than 3 million cubic feet of refrigerated and dry food storage. Today, Atalanta is the country's largest privately held food import- er, specializing in cheese, artisanal charcute- rie, deli meat, coffee, mineral water, fresh fruit, vegetables, sauces, spreads, olive oil, crackers, legumes, and more. Private brands include Celebrity, Del Destino, Eiffel Tower, and Zerto. The origins of roughly 2,500 SKUs spans 60 countries. The company's customer base is diverse, selling products through foodservice distributors, retailers, and major restaurant chains. Atalanta is part of the Gellert Global Group, which is active in restaurant opera- tions and non-food industries such as real- estate investments in metropolitan New York City, with combined revenues exceed- ing $1 billion. Sister companies include Camerican International, Finica Food Specialties, Swiss Chalet Fine Foods, JF SPRING 2015 51
