According to Packaged Facts, more than half of consumers seek local products and 60 percent perceive these foods as fresher. Also driving sales: consumers want to support local businesses, and they simply think local tastes better. Two in three shoppers go to supermarkets or grocery stores for local prod- ucts, while half frequent farmers markets. Retailers around the world are taking this news seriously. In Brisbane, Australia, 100 inde- pendent grocers working with Brisbane's Produce Markets are offering locally grown produce in a Your Local Fruit Shop campaign. Stateside, multi-regional retail- ers are buying local. Winn-Dixie is spotlighting 11 area producers—with offerings from coffee and baked goods to honey and hot sauce—in up to 77 locations in Northeast Florida for its Winn-Local Florida program.—D.S.
