What is one of your favorite articles you've written recently? Writing about Le District was a treat. I love exploring food halls, especially when they feature products from independent or unusual makers. What's your fondest food memory? Watching my mother mix the ingredients for her signature yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Te silver bowl, the mixer, the smell of vanilla—it was all magical to me as a sweets-loving small kid. What is your favorite food city and why? Tat has to be New York. From old-school city diners to hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants and now all the new food halls going up in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York supplies a dining experi- ence for every mood and palate. What are some of your non-gastronomic hobbies/interests? Reading and writing about New York City history. I'm determined one day to make olykoeks, a traditional little fried-dough cake the Dutch of New Amsterdam baked and shared on New Year's Day, the biggest holiday of the year. Eat out or stay in? Both! Eating in is cozy and comfortable, but dining out can be fun and adventurous.
