Tunisia Showcased as Country Sponsor for 2016 Summer Show T unisia grabbed headlines this fall when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a Tunisian democracy group. Now it is hoping to garner atten- tion for its distinctive foods, as the partner country for the 2016 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York, the largest marketplace for specialty food in North America. Tunisia has a rich culinary history flavored with Arab, Greek, French, Turkish, and Spanish influenc- es, but its food is not as widely known in the U.S. as that of other Mediterranean and North African countries. That may start to change. At the show, more than 38 Tunisian companies will present a wide range of products in a special pavilion, including olive oil, pasta, dates, biscuits, confections, spicy harissa, candies, jam, tuna, and organic products. There will be chef demonstra- tions and tastings each day. "Tunisian food has a place on America's table today with strong demand for healthy, flavorful foods," says Chris Nemchek, senior vice president of the Specialty Food Association, owner and pro- ducer of the Summer Fancy Food Show. "The show will provide a forum for Tunisian food companies to reach important new markets." The pavilion is sponsored by the Tunisian Export Promotion Center (CEPEX) and Tunisian Olive Oil (PACKTEC). Food processing is Tunisia's third largest manufacturing sector. Tunisia first exhibited at the Summer Fancy Food Show in 2002. This year's presence is its larg- est yet. "As partner country, Tunisia has an oppor- tunity to promote its image and Tunisian products in the U.S. market," says Sami Hassene, deputy director, CEPEX. association news Summer Fancy Food Show and SIAL Launch Collaboration to Highlight Award Winners T he Fancy Food Shows and SIAL food expo share a goal of presenting buyers of specialty food with the newest innovations in everything from chocolate, cheese and olive oil to natural and organic foods. In a new agreement, each show will present the other's award winners to provide the honored food companies with new opportunities to develop their businesses in international markets. At the 2016 Summer Fancy Food Show at Javits Center in New York, from June 26–28, a showcase will present the ten most innovative food products selected for Comexposium's SIAL Food Innovation Awards at the SIAL shows in 2014, 2015, and 2016. In reciprocation, winners of the Specialty Food Association's 2016 sofi™ Awards will be showcased in a dedicated display featuring 28 outstanding products during SIAL Paris, from October 16-20. "For years, SIAL has been feeding attendees' inspiration by showcasing product innovation in all its guises, and by spotlighting food trends from around the world," says Nicholas Trentesaux, SIAL Network director. "It is logical to join forces with the Specialty Food Association's Summer Fancy Food Show and sofi™ Awards, in the hope that we will both inspire our respective clients and partners." "The sofi Awards are the highest honor in the specialty food industry and we are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase these outstand- ing innovative products at such an important inter- national marketplace as SIAL Paris," says Laura Santella-Saccone, chief marketing officer of the Specialty Food Association. "By showcasing SIAL's Food Innovation honorees, we are adding even more innovative products to present to key buyers from around the world who attend the Summer Fancy Food Show." SUMMER 2016 145
