Women-owned
Food Businesses
Bolster Manhattan's
Economy
New York City's foodservice
industry saw a substantial boost
from women-owned businesses
from 2007 to 2012, growing 45
percent and adding 4,000 new
food businesses in that time,
according to a report from The
Center for an Urban Future.
In the upscale restaurant seg-
ment, women own only 11 per-
cent of establishments listed
on Eater's "38 Essential New
York Restaurants" list, yet many
female chefs took top honors at
this year's James Beard Awards,
like Rising Star Chef of the
Year Daniela Soto-Innes of NYC's
Cosme. When it comes to cup-
cake shops, they own 87 percent,
and kitchen incubators support
a large percentage of women-
owned businesses, like Long
Island City's The Entrepreneur
Space, which housed 135 com-
panies over the past four years,
76 percent of them founded by
women.—D.S.
