4 ❘ SPECIALTY FOOD MAGAZINE specialtyfood.com CONTRIBUTORS MEET THE CONTRIBUTOR BRANDON FOX Q&A;: The Authentic South B randon Fox is a Richmond, Va.-based writer who was originally planning to go into academia but found herself lured away by journalism—and food. What is one of your favorite articles that you've recently written? I wrote an article about James Beard Award finalist Peter Chang. He's had a fascinating life—from celebrated chef in China, to obscurity in the U.S., and then fame again. He also cooked for me—a privi- lege most don't experience. Could you share your fondest food memory? At the moment, it's one of my most recent. On Mother's Day, my family prepared an extravagant meal of flet mignon with béarnaise sauce and artichokes with hollandaise. I had no idea they could pull of something so delicious—and tricky. What was the strangest food/meal you've ever had? And how was it? Te most unusual thing I've tried was percebes in Spain. Tey're barnacles that grow on the rocks of the North Atlantic and, when they arrive at your table, look a lot like someone chopped the fngers of a few witches. Tey're absolutely wonderful—they taste of the sea and it's easy to polish of a platter all by yourself. What are some of your non-gastronomic interests? I love to read, and in the past few years I've started sailing. Do you prefer to eat in or go out? I prefer to cook at home. Eating out is great, but I do far too much of it and would rather experiment on my own. Plus, I get a stretch of peaceful alone-time while I'm making dinner. What is your favorite food city? Other than my own? After Richmond, my favorite place to eat is New York. I get up there fairly often and every trip is organized around each meal. Right now, I want to try to get to know Brooklyn better and eat my way around the borough.
