D EEP RIVER SNACKS: HELPING WITH HEART When chipping in for a good cause, Deep River Snacks founder Debbie Byrne doesn't fake it. Since 2001, when she started making snacks that she could feel good serving to family and friends, Byrne has aligned her business with charities that she could feel equally good supporting. Close to home. "The world didn't need another bag of potato chips," Byrne says bluntly. "But it does need companies that want to be responsible to the planet and to people who are not as lucky as we are." When Deep River Snacks was getting its start making popcorn, a number of Byrne's family members, friends and colleagues were experiencing serious challenges and illness. "Our first employee lost her best friend to breast cancer. My son was diagnosed with a life- threatening illness," she explains. "I saw an opportunity to bring awareness to the charities that support the issues personally affect- ing my family and friends." Moreover, the company supports causes that help the earth, powers its national sales office (in Andover, Vt.) with solar and wind energy, uses smaller boxes to reduce its carbon footprint, and sourc- es all ingredients and packaging products in the United States. "It would be very easy to cut costs in this tough economy by purchasing materials overseas," Byrne says. "But it is important to our company to do our part and keep jobs here in America." Today, Deep River Snacks is best known for its gourmet kettle-cooked potato chips, but its offerings extend to all- natural baked fries, tortilla chips and the original popcorn line. And each product supports a charity: Every time someone digs into a bag of Zesty Jalapeño chips, he's supporting rainforest conservation; when someone buys Sharp White Cheddar Cheese Popcorn, she is supporting a cancer foundation. "The Terri Brodeur Foundation, which is the charity featured on our Reduced Fat Lightly Salted [chips] flavor, is very close to our hearts," says Byrne. "It is committed to fighting breast cancer by donating 100 percent of its proceeds to research. We monetarily donate a portion of each bag sold to the charity."
