and less energy to transport than heavier cans. Unlike most alumi- num containers, the four-layer metal-based pouches are BPA-free. Sounds like a great catch. seafarepacific.com Quinn Popcorn. Microwave popcorn has been vili- fied in the press—for bags lined with PFOA (per- fluorooctanoic acid, censured by the FDA as a developmental toxin and immunotoxin) and recipes loaded with dicetyl (an artificial butter additive). That's why Quinn Popcorn debuted in late 2011 to give the classic movie snack a makeover. The com- pany created organic, non-GMO popcorn in three flavors—Parmesan & Rosemary, Vermont Maple & Sea Salt and Lemon & Sea Salt—packaged in compostable paper microwave bags (free of plastics and teflon). The toxin-free paper has been mechanically (not chemically) processed to be naturally grease- proof. quinnpopcorn.com Sencha Naturals Eco Twist Tube. Green packaging for green tea mints: Sencha Naturals recently replaced the packaging for its mints, made in a solar-powered facility no less, and became a 2012 sofi Silver Finalist for its efforts. The leaf-shaped Sen Cha tea mints now come in fully biodegradable Eco-Twist Tubes and recyclable Canisters. Product labels use 100 per- cent post-consumer materials. Alongside this initiative, the com- pany has released five flavors (Bombay Chai, Tropical Mango, Pink Dragonfruit, Moroccan Mint and Original) and a revamped website. senchanaturals.com Serendipitea. Since 1995, Serendipitea has used envi- ronmentally conscious packaging for its retail teas, including the new organic, caffeine-free Plum Crazy blend (with hibiscus, apple, rosehip, orange peel, licorice root and plum flavoring). The boxes are made from post-consumer waste, while the sealed inner bags are made with sustainable, compostable NatureFlex. The outer labels are printed with water-soluble ink on paper made with recycled materials. serendipitea.com Stonyfield Organic Yogurt. So much thought has gone into the packaging of Stonyfield's products, including its new Organic YoKids Greek Yogurt. While the company's yogurt multipack cups are 93 percent plant-based PLA (polylactic acid, derived from corn) plastic, for the majority of its yogurt products Stonyfield uses lightweight polypropylene (No. 5) plastic—a type of plastic not commonly accepted for recycling. To amend this flaw, Stonyfield has arranged a recycling program that allows consumers to drop off clean, used containers at participating Whole Foods Markets with Preserve Gimme 5 recycling bins, which send them off to become new plastic products, such as toothbrushes and razors. Customers can also mail the cups directly to Stonyfield for recycling. stonyfield.com xroads Philippine Sea Salts. This company's new Salt Cellar Set—marking its first foray into the retail market—features stylish, biodegradable and sustainable packaging. The Philippine white sea salt (Ilocano Asin) and pink sea salt (Sugpo Asin) are packed in boxes hand-woven from nipa palm (a mangrove native to the Philippines), each of which is secured with a twine bow made from abaca (a native banana species) and includes a paper tag handmade from abaca, salago fibers and cogon grass fibers. The boxes come in bags made from abaca. philippineseasalts.com |SFM| Dina Cheney is the author of cookbooks such as Williams-Sonoma New Flavors for Salads and writes for Everyday with Rachael Ray magazine.
