4. Scanning Groceries— Before Checkout With time of the essence, consumers want to get in and out of the store as quickly and smoothly as possible. According to a recent IBM Institute of Business Value study, selfcheckout is the preferred way to shop by most consumers today, and shoppers are very particular about how they want to use mobile technology while shopping. More than half say they want to use a mobile device to scan products while shopping, and to do final checkout at a self-checkout station. More than 40 percent want to scan samples and retrieve shopping items for pickup or have the items delivered directly to their homes. Two mobile-phone technologies are making these demands easier to fulfill by allowing self-scanning as customers walk around the store. More than half of shoppers want to use a mobile device to scan products while shopping, and use a self-checkout station. How it works: The IBM Mobile Shopper app incorporates Honeywell mobile scanning technology capable of scanning virtually any bar code, no matter what background it is printed on, the direction it faces or the packaging covering it. The app—available for Android and iPhone—allows consumers to scan items into a mobile phone as they shop the aisles, then pay and go at an IBM self-checkout station. Another program, AisleBuyer, offers a mobile self-checkout application that permits guests to shop and pay with a smartphone. Reviews, ratings and targeted offers appear when a customer scans a product's bar code, and customers can pay with a credit card through the app without having to stand in line at a register. Retailers benefit by being able to track customer data across all AisleBuyer mobile applications, gaining an understanding of store-specific shopping behaviors.
