This growth is slowing, however, with strong competition from other food categories both within the salty snack category and beyond impacting sales. Mintel predicts an expected 13 percent increase from 2015 to 2020 at current prices and forecasts that future growth will rely on manufacturers' ability to innovate with alternative ingredients and unique and indulgent flavor profiles. "When it comes to the cracker set, customers often tend to be brand loyal and will pick up their favorites no matter what," observes Adam Zimmer, category manager, grocery, at Lucky's Market in Niwot, Colo. "But," he continues, "they are also looking for what might be on sale so they can try other brands or varieties that they are not familiar with." According to Mintel, nearly all households purchased some type of cracker within the past six months. The most popular cracker types include saltine, butter, and cheese crackers. Four percent, however, have purchased rice, nut, bean, or seed crackers, demonstrating a consumer baseline interest in trying more of these types of products, fueling a key area of category innovation. When it comes to how consumers enjoy crunching on crackers, staightforward snacking leads the way—people more frequently eat crackers bare (60 percent), than with other toppings like cheese, spreads (55 percent), or dips (35 percent), according to Mintel.
