CABLE CAR DELIGHTS, INC. The Latest Scoop Ginger Pear Sorbet EVEN AS A FINALIST AT THE SOFI AWARDS CEREMONY, Rick Blakeney knew this category was anyone's game. "There's ten great products out there and everybody's so different," he says. "How can you really compare sorbet to sausage?" But win he did. The triumphant sorbet is as new a flavor as Cable Car Delights is to the retail market. Having provided premium gelato for foodservice since 1979 (then under different ownership), the Berkeley, Calif., business whipped up its first retail pints earlier this year for retailer Nugget Markets in Sacramento. Cable Car's initial pint container—though unflattering, Blakeney says with a laugh—marked the business's first foray into retail, bringing a handful of flavors to shelves by early June. The effort put into the products and updated packaging was an opportunity to see how they held up to the competitive retail market. "When you put in that time and effort," Blakeney says of the products and packaging, "let's see if it really is as good as we think it is. And apparently it was." The Ginger Pear Sorbet is part of Cable Car's The Latest Scoop line of sorbets and gelatos, now available by the pint in eight flavors. Ginger Pear Sorbet delivers a satisfying balance of crisp pear and spicy ginger. "The ginger's not so overwhelming that it's spicy," Blakeney explains. "It's got a delicate flavor to it and doesn't overpower the pear." Blakeney's next step is to increase availability. "This is a great opportunity for me to share with not just friends but everybody. And this is my passion. It's fun to be able to share that with more than just restaurants," he says. Suggested retail price: $5.49/pint.
