➊ ➋ AJIRI TEA COMPANY Kenyan Black Tea–Loose FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR, AJIRI TEA HAS WON THIS CATEGORY, first with its Kenyan Black Tea Bags, now with loose-leaf. And with good reason: It's tough to trump packaging that features physically handmade, unique works of art on every box. The product in its entirety represents Kenya's richness: Employees at a women's cooperative in Western Kenya hand-create these stunning artistic scenes—depicting people, animals, the landscape and everyday life—using dried banana tree bark, an abundant, sustainable resource. Inside the box is the cellophane wrapped tea, tied with twine (also handmade from the bark) and colorful paper beads, each hand-twisted and made with 100 percent recycled magazine paper. The black tea itself is not to be overlooked: one of Kenya's largest export crops, the leaves are processed at a Rainforest Alliance–certified, farmer-owned cooperative and, when brewed, exude a fresh, bold fragrance and flavor. Validating its quality, the tea won the Buyers Pick award for best black tea at the World Tea Expo in 2011. Sara Holby is the young innovator and entrepreneur of Ajiri Tea, which has created employment for more than 60 women, and whose full proceeds are put toward sending orphans of those communities to school through the Ajiri Foundation. Ajiri means "to employ" in Swahili, the local language of these women and children. To learn more about the Ajiri Foundation and the orphans benefiting from the proceeds, visit ajirifoundation.org. Suggested retail price: $9–$11/3.5 ounces. Contact: Sara Holby, Ajiri Tea Company; 610.982.5075; sara@ajiritea.com; ajiritea.com.—E.M. FINALISTS ➊ LITTLE PRODUCTS CO.
