G REYSTON BAKERY: BUILDING A PATH TO SELF-SUFFICIENCY This Yonkers, N.Y., bakery sums it all up in its mission statement: "We don't hire people to bake brownies. We bake brownies to hire people." Humble beginnings to a higher calling. Greyston's commitment to making high-quality baked goods while uplifting the lives of people in the local community is in keeping with the vision of Bernard Tetsugen Glassman, who in 1982, along with a Zen meditation group he led, borrowed $300,000 to open a small store- front bakery in the Bronx, N.Y. The goal was to produce quality, locally made products that would give his group a sustainable, satisfying livelihood. Soon, a larger mission developed to support low-income individuals and their families. "Once Bernie was able to provide job opportunities, he realized that people needed more than just a job," says Lisa Salzman, director of sales and marketing at Greyston. And so, Greyston Foundation was created to help individuals forge a path to self-sufficiency, by providing not only jobs but also workforce development, affordable housing, youth services and health care. Employment and partnerships. Since 1990, Greyston Bakery has been supplying Ben & Jerry's with chewy, fudgy brownies for such popular ice cream flavors as Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Half Baked. At its state-of- the-art facility on the banks of the Hudson River, the bakery produces more than 20,000 pounds of ice cream mix-ins per day. With an open-hire policy, employees receive on-site training and fair wages and benefits. Greyston recently partnered with Whole Planet Foundation, Whole Foods Market's nonprofit arm, to create a line of "decadent, gourmet brownies, stemming from both organizations' commitment to the allevia- tion of poverty and supporting entrepreneurs," Salzman says. Greyston Bakery is the first social enterprise to register as a Benefit Corporation in New York state, demonstrating its higher standards of corporate purpose, accountability and transparency.
